Players

The top MP3 players are Winamp (a classic and still at the top) and ?. The choice between these two top players is a matter of preference.

Winamp

Quintessential

UltraPlayer MP3 2.0
Comment: Recommended, but I haven't tried it. Lots of graphics.

RealPlayer
Comment: Plays MP3 and other formats. Includes RealJukeBox. Very popular player, but RealJukeBox not well reviewed.
License: Free, extended "pro" version for $
URL: www.real.com/

Jukeboxes

Comprehensive software for playing, managing playlists, etc. The best reviews I've seen are for MusicMatchJukebox and AudioCatalyst, neither of which is free ($30). Not recommended are RealJukeBox and AudioGrabber.
MusicMatch Jukebox

CD Writing Software

Two recommended programs to write audio CDs, doing normalization etc, are:Adaptec Easy CD Creator and CeQuadrat WinOnCD 3.7.

Encoders

You've got to encode your WAV files or CDs. Here are some programs to do it, tho many programs have MP3 encoders builtin.
Ogg Vorbis
Description: This is a competing encoding/compression technology with mp3.
URL: www.vorbis.com
LAME
Description: A GPL mp3 encoder.
URL: lame.sourceforge.net

Plugins

Beatnik plugin for Netscape
Comment: Plays mix of MIDI and wave sound. It looks like their RMF (Rich Music Format) may become popular. It's supported in Macromedia Director, Adobe GoLive, Java 1.3, and Netscape 4.?. NOTE: This is just an installer that checks for the files you need and downloads them.
URL: www.beatnik.com/
Koan IE Plugin -- out of date?
Description: Similar to Beatnik -- offers mix of synthesized music with MP3 and other. Can have very small audio files with long play times. However, it isn't a popular format.

Misc

Some other recommended free programs: Cassette Tape Producer for writing to cassette tapes, MP3box for ripping and playing, and Shuffler for converting from one encoding to another.
