LinkLib: Internet - Email
- Email Clients
- Free email client software is available in Netscape Communicator (v 6.0 looks like it has good email software),
Outlook Express (with Internet Explorer), MS Outlook,
Eudora, and Pegasus.
I've tried them all (except the new NN 6.0), and don't like any of them
very much. None of them did a good job of managing multiple accounts.
Someone recommended Becky and The Bat!.
- SMTP Servers
- Because my ISP doesn't allow me to send email with a return address that
isn't theirs, I've been trying some email servers that I run on my own
machine. I'm using ADR, which works fine but I hated to support spam software.
Wish I know of a free, open source, solution. Reportedly Argosoft has a free
SMTP server, but I haven't tried it.
- Eudora
- Description: Eudora one of the
most popular email programs. I've used an earlier version, but don't really
like it that much -- the interface is a bit awkward, and it
doesn't do a good job of separting different accounts (or
"personalities" as they are called).
I'm going to try the new version.
License: The new version of software has three different
license options which can be varied at any time:
(1) The free "Lite" version without some functionality,
(2) The free full version with advertising on the screen (not in messages),
(3) The for-pay full version without advertising.

- Advanced Direct Remailer
- Description: This performs two functions:
- It acts as a complete SMPT / MTA for outgoing email. You no longer
have to go thru your ISP to send email. My ISP doesn't let me send
email with a return address that isn't theirs, so I've used it for
this. It worked fine.
- A mass mailer of the worst sort. It allows you to set the email
headers to anything you want, so it can make the email appear to
be from anyone. Of course, forging email isn't that hard anyway,
but this looks like the tool used by spammers.
