LinkLib: HTML: Editors

Here are some alternatives to the big commercial HTML editors, eg, Dreamweaver and FrontPage (loathed by many). I've used, and like, HTML-Kit, Arachnophilia, and TopStyle (CSS editor).

HTML-Kit
Description: An HTML Editor with an extensible plugin architecture. I use it for most of my HTML editing (syntax coloring, auto indent, and zillions of menus for editing). I find two features especially useful: checking the HTML and checking for XML legality. Both let some things thru, but together get almost everything.

Arachnophilia
Comment: Favorite of some. I use HTML-Kit for most editing because it is easier to check the HTML, however, there are three things I use Arachnophilia for:
  1. It produces a nice list of orphan files in your site.
  2. It produces a list of bad links - click to edit the file.
  3. Uploading recently changed files is easy. This is not the same as synchronization unfortunately, but still useful.
Note: Arachnophilia was completely rewritten after I wrote this. The new version appears to lack the features that I especially liked.
License: Free (read the CareWare statement from About dialog).

TopStyle
Description: A recommended editor for CSS.
License: Lite version free, full version $. I use the free version and like it. This is really good and I'd buy the Pro version in a moment if I did much CSS.

Nvu
Comment: I tried version 0.3 briefly. This looks like it might develop into somthing very good, perhaps by the 1.0 release expected in late 2004.

Comment: Haven't tried it, but some others like it.

AceHTML
Comment: Popular. The little testing of done with the free version 4: inserts non-xml meta tag to define char set. The pro version manages projects, but doesn't seem to synchronize, at least in version 4. Little XML support.
License: free, with for-pay Pro version also available.

NoteTab
Comment: This has had favorable comments from a few people, but I haven't tried it yet.
License: Free. There is also a "Pro" version.
